Giving USA Annual Report for Philanthropy Year 2022
Health Care Giving Insights
Contributions to the health subsector comprised 10 of all donations received by charities in 2022. Giving to health is estimated to have grown by 5.1% between 2021 and 2022 (a decline of 2.6% when adjusted for inflation). Following are some highlights from the research:
Gifts of $10 million or more to health care organizations declined slightly in 2022
Marts&Lundy’s $10M+ Gifts Report 2023 shows a 5% decrease in gifts of $10 million or more to the health subsector in 2022 compared to 2021.
The number of gifts to health, ranging from $10 million to $24 million, has steadily increased, from 11 in 2020 to 21 in 2021 and 28 in 2022. The number of gifts of $100 million or more declined in 2022 compared to 2021, from nine to five, respectively.
Health care worker shortage and widespread burnout inspired giving in 2022
COVID-19 was a uniquely traumatic experience for the health workforce and their families, with two-thirds of physicians experiencing burnout. In 2022, several gifts were directed toward addressing burnout and increasing the health care workforce in years to come. Several gifts also directly addressed the nursing shortage.
Fundraisers report donor acquisition as the top challenge in health care
The CCS Philanthropy Pulse Report shows donor acquisition and donor retention are the top fundraising challenges experienced year over year by nonprofit organizations. Other noted challenges that worsened in 2022 include hiring and retaining fundraisers, navigating data management issues, shifting donor interests and securing noncash assets.
Insufficient staffing, changing donor demographics, lack of a major gifts program, board engagement and economic uncertainty are some of the fundraising challenges that span across organization operations in the 2023 CCS Philanthropy Pulse Report.
