Driving Philanthropy
with Passion & Purpose

a letter from...

One of the most satisfying parts of my job is witnessing the good work of our foundation board members and their positive impact on our ministries.

At a recent Providence St. Joseph Hospital Foundation board meeting, board member Randy Davis presented a compelling story. He’s worked closely with the foundation to identify 25 people in his network and develop specific engagement strategies. His goal? Help the foundation bring in multiple six-figure gifts. Chair Tanja Cebula has done a marvelous job setting expectations for board members about their role in supporting their foundation colleagues.

I was privileged to attend the Queen’s (Queen of the Valley Hospital) fundraising gala. Jeff Streblow’s leadership was apparent in the character and quality of the event—and its success. It was a pleasure watching trustee Ellie Anest in action. She not only filled a lively table, but she also kept everyone happily engaged.

These are just two examples of the significant influence board members have on the success of their ministries. They both underscore the contributions only community volunteer leaders can make—connecting their networks with their passion for supporting community health. Your partnership is not a “nice to have.” It’s core to our growth strategy in service to our vision for health for a better world.

Bravo and thank you,

We all have our reasons for serving on our boards. For me, it was almost predestined! My paternal grandfather, Al Streblow, alongside many other community members in Napa, led fundraising efforts to build Queen of the Valley Medical Center. Al passed away before the foundation was founded. My maternal grandfather, Albert Frommelt, my father, Jack Streblow, and my uncle, Judge Thomas Kongsgaard, were on the founding board. I’m a third-generation board member.

Having this historical lens gives me a great appreciation for the value of connecting with you, my fellow board chairs. Our ability to interact with and learn from each other gives us a tremendous advantage. Being part of a larger organization grants us access to a wealth of knowledge and experiences that we could not replicate individually. The power of this network is already evident in our evolving fundraising strategies and shared successes.

The eye-opening new approaches to fundraising and fresh thinking from Kenya Beckmann and her team are positioning all of us for greater sustainability and success. I’m optimistic about this progression and the potential it holds for our local hospital and our sister ministries.

As we move forward, I’m excited about the opportunity to collaborate with all of you. Being a part of regional committees has already given me exposure to the incredible work you are doing, and I find it both inspiring and informative.

Let us continue to learn from each other, support one another, and make a lasting impact on the communities we serve. Together, we can accomplish remarkable things and further our shared mission.

With gratitude and warm regards,

Jeff Strebow
Chair, Queen of the Valley Hospital Foundation

Chief Executive, Providence South Division

In June, we welcomed Laureen Driscoll as the new chief executive of Providence South Division. Laureen quickly began touring our ministries and meeting with our boards, caregivers, providers and donors. She’s attended openings, been a featured speaker at major ministry events and hosted meetings with ministry leadership.

Recently, Kenya caught up with Laureen for a conversation about her impressions so far and her thoughts about the future of Providence South Division.

Welcome to the Perspectives column, created to spotlight our South Division board leadership. This column is a resource for knowledge sharing and connection across ministries.

In our Summer Edition of the Board Forum, we used Perspectives to pose a set of questions to seven board chairs. In this issue, we asked six more chairs the same questions. As before, the board chairs we interviewed were open and candid with their answers.

Giving USA Annual Report for Philanthropy Year 2022

Americans gave an estimated $499.33 billion to U.S. charities in 2022, representing a decline from the extraordinary generosity exhibited during the pandemic era. The decrease follows the two strongest years of charitable giving on record in inflation-adjusted terms, including 2021, when giving surpassed $500 billion for the first time.

Knowing When to Lean In and Out: Drawing the Distinction between Governance and Management in the Providence Foundation Board

That line between governance and management can often be very thin and too easy to cross. This presentation will help board members understand the difference, making that line harder to step over. Areas to be covered: the role of management, the role of the board, and understanding the overarching questions that will clarify these roles.

Implicit Bias Educational Session

As part of our Board Enrichment opportunities, we offered two Implicit Bias Education Sessions on November 1st and November 2nd. We plan to offer these sessions annually.
Below is a brief background on the commitment Providence has to this education. While these are typically offered to caregivers we believe it is important to extend this offering to our board members.

In 2021, Providence launched an Implicit Bias course for caregivers. It was developed to provide leaders with an understanding of different biases that occur in the workplace, while providing practical strategies to respond to biases that are grounded in our organizational Mission and Values. Learning objectives for the course involve participants being able to walk away from the course knowing:

• The definitions of diversity, equity, inclusion (DEI), and microaggressions
• Common types of bias and microaggressions
• How to respond to biased behavior
• How to support those who experience this bias
